The scene of an Israelite idolatrous episode with the god “Baal of Peor” (Num 25:3-5), which was long remembered (Hos 9:10; Deut 4:3; Ps 106:28). The site was probably modern Khirbet esh-Sheikh Jayil some eight miles west of Hesban.
